Ravenscraig Ltd appoint Turner & Townsend

Experienced global consultancy to manage £600 million phase two regeneration of Ravenscraig site

Global construction and management consultancy Turner & Townsend has been appointed project managers for the second phase of the ambitious regeneration of Ravenscraig.

Following OJEU procedures, Ravenscraig Ltd has appointed Turner & Townsend to project manage the creation of a new town centre on the site of the former Ravenscraig steelworks in Lanarkshire.

The company will start work immediately and will be involved in the process to select further members of the consultancy team tasked with the planning and delivery of the second phase of development.

This will represent a further investment of some £600 million to create a new town centre consisting of around 1 million sq ft of retail, leisure, restaurant and community facilities in a modern, attractive centre. 1500 housing units and 500,000 sq ft of commercial space will also be created as part of the second phase.

It will be served by a new railway station, a bus interchange, and have substantial car parking with dual carriageway access from both the M8 and M74.

Turner & Townsend have a track record of delivering projects all over the world, employing over 2,400 people at 56 locations around the globe. The company has been involved in a number of high-profile regeneration projects, including Dublin Docklands and the Avenue Coking Works in Sheffield.

David Hogg, Director of Turner & Townsend said: "Following our successful involvement in the delivery of Phase One of Ravenscraig, which is due for completion in summer 2008, we are delighted to be appointed to deliver the second phase of what is one of the most important regeneration projects ever seen in the UK."

Ravenscraig Ltd is leading one of the most extensive regeneration projects in Europe and comprises Wilson Bowden Developments Ltd, Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire and Corus.

Jim Fitzsimons, Director of Ravenscraig Ltd said: "Turner & Townsend have significant experience of project managing regeneration projects around the world and it is vital we have the best people involved in a scheme as far-reaching as Ravenscraig.

"We are creating a new living, thriving town centre in Lanarkshire and we are delighted a company with the international project management experience as Turner & Townsend will be involved in this exciting development in the project.

"We are counting on their experience on helping us select the team which will prepare the Area Planning Briefs and commence the process of turning our vision into a reality."

The team charged with delivering Phase Two of the regeneration of Ravenscraig is now taking shape.

International retail and leisure specialists Richardsons Capital LLP will form a joint venture with Wilson Bowden Developments to spearhead development of the retail element of the new town centre. They have appointed a separate team lead by internationally-renowned architects HOK to develop the retail and leisure concepts for the town centre along with property advisors Cushman & Wakefield and King Sturge.

The redevelopment of Ravenscraig is expected to create 12,000 jobs and attract in excess of £1.2 billion of private sector investment over a period of 15 to 20 years.

Development activity for Phase Two is scheduled to begin later in 2008 and work will continue for three years.

Work is already well under way on the £200 million first phase of the redevelopment of the 1,100 acre site in Lanarkshire with a £30 million regional sports facility, a £70 million campus for Motherwell College and 850 new houses all scheduled for construction.
